My Personal Opinion
You might think these places are only for Pokémon-aged kids, but honestly, I’ve visited many aquariums in Japan and:
- Hakkeijima Sea Paradise was the most exciting — with high-quality shows that were better than some theme parks!
- Aqua Park Shinagawa impressed me with its modern design and easy access.
- Sumida Aquarium is small, but nice for a short break while sightseeing in Skytree.
- If you want something more artistic, DMM Kariyushi Aquarium in Okinawa is truly unique — though far from Tokyo.
Even though I love Okinawa, Churaumi Aquarium (while large) didn’t feel as fun to me personally.
Best Aquarium Depending on Your Plan
- Half-day casual visit in Tokyo → Sumida Aquarium or Sunshine Aquarium
- Full-day in Tokyo → Aqua Park Shinagawa
- Best overall near Tokyo → Hakkeijima Sea Paradise
- Want seaside & travel combined → Enoshima Aquarium + beach walk
Budget Guide
- General admission: ¥1,000–¥3,000 per person (~$7–$20 USD)
- Kids under 4: Usually free
- Hakkeijima: Some areas are free, but full access (rides + aquarium) requires a pass (~¥5,000)
Seasonal Tips
- Weekdays are less crowded
- Summer → bring water, hat, and cooling items. Some aquariums like Enoshima & Hakkeijima are outdoors.
- Rainy days → Aqua Park or Sumida Aquarium are perfect indoor options
