Best Art and Design Experiences in Japan

“Can you recommend unique art and design places in Japan?”

Japan has some truly one-of-a-kind art experiences that you won’t find anywhere else. Let me share my favorites!

In Tokyo

“What’s special in Tokyo?”

Art Aquarium (Nihonbashi)

This is unlike any museum you’ve seen:

  • Living goldfish displayed as art
  • Beautiful lighting and traditional Japanese design
  • Feels magical and dreamlike
  • Perfect for photos

The space blends traditional Japanese beauty with living creatures. It’s really something special.

Details:

  • Location: Nihonbashi, Tokyo
  • Takes about 1-2 hours
  • Can get crowded – weekdays are better

teamLab Borderless / Planets

If you haven’t heard of teamLab:

  • Digital art that responds to your movement
  • Immersive rooms you walk through
  • Very popular – book tickets in advance!
  • Planets has water areas (wear shorts)

These are probably Japan’s most famous modern art experiences.

Beyond Tokyo

“What about outside Tokyo?“

21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art (Kanazawa)

This is worth a special trip:

  • Circular building – the architecture itself is art
  • Interactive exhibits you can touch and enter
  • Famous “Swimming Pool” installation
  • Blurs the line between art and environment

Located in Kanazawa (about 2.5 hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen). Combine with Kenrokuen Garden!

Naoshima Art Island

For serious art lovers:

  • Entire island dedicated to art
  • Yayoi Kusama’s yellow pumpkin sculpture
  • Chichu Art Museum (underground!)
  • Takes a full day or overnight

Located in the Seto Inland Sea, between Okayama and Takamatsu.

What Japanese People Actually Do

Most locals:

  • Visit art museums on rainy days
  • Book teamLab tickets in advance
  • Make day trips to Kanazawa for the museum
  • Combine art with other sightseeing

Art museums are popular date spots too!
