Which ATMs in Japan Accept Foreign Cards?
A local explains where to withdraw cash with overseas bank cards.
“Which ATMs in Japan accept foreign cards?”
Not all ATMs work with foreign cards. Here are the ones that reliably do:
ATMs That Accept Foreign Cards
| ATM Location | Works With Foreign Cards | Hours | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7-Eleven | Yes — most reliable | 24 hours (some close 11pm-6am) | ¥110 per transaction |
| Japan Post Office | Yes | Mon-Fri 9am-5pm (varies) | Free or ¥110 |
| Lawson | Yes | 24 hours | ¥110-220 |
| FamilyMart (E-net) | Some cards | 24 hours | ¥110-220 |
| Regular bank ATMs | Usually NO | Business hours only | Varies |
My Recommendation: 7-Eleven
7-Eleven ATMs are the gold standard for foreign cards. They accept Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, Cirrus, PLUS, and more. There are over 21,000 7-Elevens in Japan — you’re never far from one.
How to use:
- Insert card → Select English → Choose Withdrawal
- Enter amount (multiples of ¥1,000 or ¥10,000)
- Maximum per transaction: usually ¥50,000-100,000
How Much Cash Do I Need?
Japan is increasingly cashless, but carry some cash for:
- Small restaurants and izakaya
- Temples and shrine donations
- Vending machines (some don’t take IC cards)
- Rural areas
My suggestion: Withdraw ¥20,000-30,000 when you arrive and top up as needed. For a week in Tokyo, ¥30,000-50,000 in cash plus credit cards covers most people.
Tips to Avoid Problems
- Tell your bank you’re traveling to Japan — prevents your card being blocked
- Withdraw during business hours if possible — easier to get help if something goes wrong
- Check daily withdrawal limits with your bank before traveling
- Wise and Revolut cards work well at 7-Eleven with good exchange rates
