The timing changes every year and varies dramatically by location. Japan stretches from subarctic Hokkaido to subtropical Okinawa, so the foliage season lasts about 2.5 months across the country. Hereโ€™s my local guide:

When to See Fall Colors by Region

RegionPeak SeasonBest Spots
HokkaidoMid-OctoberDaisetsuzan National Park, Lake Toya
TohokuLate OctoberNikko, Oirase Gorge, Ginzan Onsen
Kanto (Tokyo)Late November โ€“ Early DecemberMeiji Jingu Gaien, Rikugien Garden

Kansai (Kyoto)Mid to Late NovemberTofuku-ji, Eikan-do, Arashiyama
KyushuLate November โ€“ DecemberDazaifu, Kirishima

My Top 5 Spots (Based on Personal Experience)

1. Tofuku-ji Temple, Kyoto

The most famous autumn spot in Japan for good reason. Over 2,000 maple trees turning red at once. Go early morning (before 8am) to avoid the worst crowds.

2. Meiji Jingu Gaien, Tokyo

A stunning 300-meter ginkgo tree avenue that turns brilliant gold. Completely free. Best in late November.

3. Nikko, Tochigi

Waterfalls + temples + red maples = perfection. About 2 hours from Tokyo by train. Peak is usually mid-to-late October.

4. Kawaguchiko, Yamanashi

Red maple leaves with Mt. Fuji in the background. The Momiji Corridor along the lake is lit up at night during the festival (usually mid-November).

5. Oirase Gorge, Aomori

A 14km stream walk through a forest of color. Less crowded than Kyoto. Best in late October.

How to Track the Foliage

  • Japan Meteorological Corporation releases foliage forecasts starting September
  • The color change moves south over time (opposite of cherry blossoms)
  • Temperature drops trigger the change โ€” a sudden cold snap can speed things up

Pro Tips

  • Kyoto gets VERY crowded during peak foliage โ€” book hotels months in advance
  • Weekday visits are much more pleasant than weekends
  • Night illuminations (ใƒฉใ‚คใƒˆใ‚ขใƒƒใƒ—) at temples make autumn leaves even more magical โ€” Eikan-do and Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto are especially stunning
  • Rain after peak can strip leaves quickly โ€” check forecasts and go when you can
