Should I Visit Japan During Golden Week?

A local explains why Golden Week is the worst time to visit Japan.

Should I Visit Japan During Golden Week?

“Is it okay to visit Japan during Golden Week?”

To put it bluntly: It’s better NOT to come.

What Is Golden Week?

“When is it?”

Golden Week is April 29th to May 5th.

This week has many national holidays in Japan.

Why You Should Avoid It

“Why is it so bad?”

In Japan, there are only two one-week holidays:

  • Golden Week (May)
  • New Year’s holiday (January)

That’s why almost ALL Japanese people travel during this time!

The Problems

“What happens during Golden Week?”

Everything is difficult:

  • Shinkansen (bullet train) is fully booked
  • Airplanes are fully booked
  • Accommodation prices increase a lot
  • Roads are the most congested all year
  • Popular spots are extremely crowded

The Only Reason to Come

“Is there any good reason to visit?”

Only one: To meet friends who live in Japan.

If there’s no other reason, I’ll say it again:

Absolutely do not come during Golden Week.

What Japanese People Actually Do

Most locals:

  • Travel domestically during Golden Week
  • Book everything months in advance
  • Know it’s the busiest time
  • Sometimes stay home to avoid crowds

Extra Travel Tips

  1. Book 3+ months ahead – If you must come

  2. Expect high prices – Hotels cost much more

  3. Consider other dates – May after Golden Week is nice

  4. New Year is similar – Also very busy

  5. Ask me for alternative dates – Happy to help!
