My Recommendation for Tourists

Start at Uniqlo. Their Heattech innerwear (¥990-1,990) is what most Japanese people use as their first layer in winter. It’s lightweight, warm, and packs small. Layer it with a Uniqlo Ultra Light Down jacket (¥5,990-7,990) and you’re set for most of Japan’s winter.

For serious cold (Hokkaido, skiing): Add a Montbell outer layer. Their gear is designed for Japanese winters and is lighter than most Western brands.

Sales Timing

  • New Year sales (福袋) — January 1-3. Huge discounts + mystery bags
  • End of season — February-March for winter clearance
  • Black Friday — increasingly popular at Uniqlo, GU, and department stores
