Have you hiked Mount Fuji? Season started from July 1st every year?

β€œHave you hiked Mount Fuji? When does the season start?”

Yes, I’ve climbed Mt. Fuji! The official climbing season is July 1st to early September each year. Outside this window, the mountain trails are closed due to dangerous weather conditions.

The Basics

DetailInfo
Elevation3,776m (12,389 ft) β€” Japan’s highest peak
SeasonJuly 1 – early September
Time to climb5–8 hours up, 3–4 hours down
CostΒ₯2,000 entrance fee (since 2024) + mountain hut stays
DifficultyModerate β€” no technical climbing, but physically demanding

The Four Trails

  • Start: Subaru Line 5th Station
  • Access: Direct bus from Shinjuku (~2.5 hours)
  • Pros: Most mountain huts, best facilities, sunrise views
  • Cons: Very crowded, especially weekends in August
  • Start: Fujinomiya 5th Station
  • Access: Bus from Shin-Fuji Station
  • Pros: Shortest distance to summit
  • Cons: Steep, fewer huts

Subashiri and Gotemba Trails

  • Less crowded but longer. Best for experienced hikers who want solitude.

My Honest Tips

  • Start early or do an overnight climb β€” many climbers start at night (10pm–midnight) to see sunrise from the summit
  • Book mountain huts early β€” they fill up fast in peak season. Β₯7,000–Β₯10,000 per night with dinner and breakfast
  • Bring warm clothes β€” it’s 0–5Β°C at the summit even in summer. Wind makes it feel colder
  • Altitude sickness is real β€” climb slowly, drink water, rest at each station
  • Avoid weekends in August β€” the trail becomes a traffic jam. Weekdays in July are best

What to Bring

  • Layers: Base layer + fleece + waterproof jacket
  • Headlamp: Essential for night climbing
  • Cash: Mountain huts and toilets (Β₯200-300) are cash only
  • Walking stick: You can buy one at the 5th Station (~Β₯1,500) and get it branded at each station
  • Snacks and water: Prices increase at higher altitudes (Β₯500 for a water bottle at 8th station)

The Summit Experience

Standing at the top of Japan at sunrise is genuinely one of the most memorable experiences of my life. The Japanese call it β€œγ”ζ₯光” (goraikou) β€” the arrival of light. It’s worth every step.
