Are There Bugs and Mosquitoes in Tokyo?
A local explains why you don't need to worry about insects.
“Should I worry about bugs in Tokyo?”
Not really. Tokyo is a major city - insects aren’t a big problem in urban areas.
Mosquitoes
“Are there mosquitoes?”
Yes, but they’re manageable:
- Most active in summer (June-September)
- Worse near parks, rivers, and temples
- Urban areas like Ginza and Shinjuku have very few
- Not dangerous - no malaria or dengue in Tokyo
How to deal with them:
- Buy mosquito repellent at any convenience store or drugstore
- Japanese repellent patches (虫除けシール) work great
- Wear light-colored clothing in the evening
- Hotel rooms are generally mosquito-free
Other Insects
“What about other bugs?”
Cicadas (Semi)
- Very loud in summer but completely harmless
- Part of the Japanese summer experience
- You’ll hear them, not see them
Cockroaches
- Exist but mostly outdoors in summer
- Hotels are generally fine
- Not more than any other big city
Giant Hornets (Suzumebachi)
- Rare in central Tokyo
- More common in rural/mountain areas
- Don’t panic - just move away calmly
What Japanese People Actually Do
Most locals:
- Use mosquito coils (蚊取り線香) at home in summer
- Carry portable repellent sprays
- Don’t worry much about insects in the city
- Accept cicada noise as the soundtrack of summer
