Do I Need a Power Adapter for Japan?
A local explains plugs and voltage. What works and what to bring.
“Do I need a power adapter for Japan? Will my devices work?”
Maybe! It depends on where you’re from and what devices you have.
Japan’s Plugs
“What type of plug does Japan use?”
Type A plugs:
- Two flat prongs
- Same as USA, Canada, Mexico
- No ground prong (third pin)
If you’re from USA/Canada:
- Your plugs will work!
- No adapter needed for most devices
If you’re from Europe/UK/Australia:
- You need an adapter
- Easy to find and cheap
Voltage
“What about voltage?”
Japan uses 100V
- USA/Canada: 120V (close enough)
- Europe: 220-240V (different!)
Check your devices:
- Look for “INPUT: 100-240V” on chargers
- Most phone/laptop chargers work worldwide
- Hair dryers and straighteners often don’t!
What Works Without Adapter
“What devices are usually OK?”
Usually fine (check label):
- Phone chargers
- Laptop chargers
- Camera chargers
- USB devices
- Tablets
May have issues:
- Hair dryers
- Hair straighteners/curlers
- Electric shavers (some)
- High-wattage devices
What to Do
“Should I buy an adapter?”
My advice:
- Check your device labels first
- Buy a universal adapter before traveling
- Hotels sometimes lend adapters
- Don’t bring high-wattage items
What Japanese People Actually Do
Most locals:
- Use 100V devices designed for Japan
- Don’t think about voltage issues
- Know visitors need adapters sometimes
