Why do I need both a JR pass and SUICA card?

Combine a JR Pass for intercity trains and a SUICA card for local subways, buses, and stores to travel Japan smoothly without ticket hassles.

Why do I need both a JR pass and SUICA card?

β€œWhy do I need both a JR Pass and Suica card?”

Great question β€” these two cards serve completely different purposes. Think of it this way: JR Pass is for long-distance travel, Suica is for daily convenience.

What Each Card Does

JR Pass (Japan Rail Pass)

  • What it covers: Unlimited rides on JR trains nationwide, including most Shinkansen (bullet trains)
  • Best for: Multi-city trips (Tokyo β†’ Kyoto β†’ Osaka β†’ Hiroshima)
  • Duration: 7, 14, or 21 consecutive days
  • Cost: Β₯50,000 / Β₯80,000 / Β₯100,000 (7/14/21 days)
  • Does NOT cover: Tokyo Metro, private railways, buses, convenience stores

Suica / PASMO (IC Card)

  • What it covers: All trains (JR, Metro, private lines), buses, and payments at stores
  • Best for: Daily getting around within a city + small purchases
  • Cost: Β₯500 deposit + whatever you charge (rechargeable)
  • Bonus: Tap to pay at convenience stores, vending machines, restaurants, coin lockers

Why You Need Both

SituationWhich to Use
Tokyo β†’ Kyoto (Shinkansen)JR Pass
Kyoto Station β†’ Fushimi Inari (JR local)JR Pass
Shibuya β†’ Asakusa (Tokyo Metro)Suica
Buying a drink at 7-ElevenSuica
Tokyo β†’ Hakone (private railway)Suica
Tokyo β†’ Osaka (Shinkansen)JR Pass

Do I Even Need a JR Pass?

Not always. The JR Pass is only worth it if you’re making long-distance trips:

  • Tokyo + Kyoto + Osaka (7-day pass) β€” Yes, worth it
  • Staying in Tokyo only β€” No, just use Suica
  • Tokyo + one day trip β€” Probably not worth it, buy individual tickets

Quick math: A round-trip Tokyo ↔ Kyoto Shinkansen costs Β₯26,640. A 7-day JR Pass is Β₯50,000. So you need at least one more long trip to break even.

How to Get Each

Suica

  • At the airport: Look for β€œWelcome Suica” machines at Narita or Haneda β€” takes 2 minutes
  • On iPhone: Add Suica directly to Apple Wallet (no physical card needed!)
  • Charge: Any train station machine or convenience store

JR Pass

  • Online: JR Pass official site β€” order before your trip
  • At the airport: JR ticket counters at Narita or Haneda
  • Activate: Choose your start date when you pick it up

My Setup

I always carry a Suica on my iPhone for daily use. When I’m taking visitors around Japan on multi-city trips, we get a JR Pass for the Shinkansen portions. The two cards complement each other perfectly.
