Kamakura or Kawagoe for a Day Trip?

A local compares these two popular day trip destinations from Tokyo.

Kamakura or Kawagoe for a Day Trip?

โ€œKamakura or Kawagoe for a day trip from Asakusa? Which is better?โ€

This is a tough question! Both are amazing, but if I had to choose, I personally recommend Kamakura.

Why I Love Kamakura

โ€œWhat makes Kamakura special?โ€

Kamakura has a special atmosphere!

  • Surrounded by beautiful nature
  • The sea and the mountains
  • Relaxed, laid-back vibe
  • People enjoy slower lifestyle

What to See in Kamakura

โ€œWhat can I do there?โ€

Famous attractions:

  • The Great Buddha (Daibutsu)
  • Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine
  • Hasedera Temple
  • Komachi Street (snacks and souvenirs!)
  • Enoshima Island (nearby)

Kamakura covers a larger area โ€“ start early for a full day!

What About Kawagoe?

โ€œIs Kawagoe good too?โ€

Yes! Kawagoe is also charming!

Good for:

  • Beautiful shrines and temples
  • Kurazukuri Street (old traditional houses)
  • Candy Alley (local sweets)
  • Closer and easier if starting late

Kawagoe is compact โ€“ great for half-day or relaxed schedule.

My Recommendation

โ€œWhich should I choose?โ€

Start early? Go to Kamakura for nature and history.

Starting late? Visit Kawagoe for a quick, traditional experience.

Either way, youโ€™ll have an amazing day trip!
