Kamakura or Kawagoe: Which Day Trip Is Better?

A local's comparison of two popular day trips from Tokyo. Sea and temples vs traditional streets.

Kamakura or Kawagoe: Which Day Trip Is Better?

โ€œWhich is better for a day trip from Asakusa: Kamakura or Kawagoe?โ€

This is tough! Both are amazing. But if I had to choose, I personally recommend Kamakura.

My Pick: Kamakura

โ€œWhy Kamakura?โ€

I really love the atmosphere:

  • Surrounded by sea and mountains
  • People there live a slower, relaxed lifestyle
  • Beautiful nature everywhere
  • Perfect for a full day

What to see:

  • The Great Buddha (Daibutsu) โ€“ Iconic!
  • Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine
  • Hasedera Temple
  • Komachi Street โ€“ Snacks and souvenirs
  • Enoshima โ€“ Small island nearby (if you have time)

Kamakura covers a larger area, so start early for the best experience.

Kawagoe: Also Great

โ€œWhat about Kawagoe?โ€

Kawagoe is very charming too!

Pros:

  • Closer to Tokyo
  • Easier to explore if starting late
  • Beautiful traditional Kurazukuri streets
  • Famous for sweet potatoes

What to see:

  • Kurazukuri Street โ€“ Old warehouse buildings
  • Toki no Kane โ€“ Bell tower
  • Kashiya Yokocho โ€“ Candy street
  • Shrines and temples

Perfect for a half-day or relaxed afternoon.

What Japanese People Actually Do

Most locals:

  • Go to Kamakura for beach + temples
  • Visit Kawagoe for the old-town feel
  • Do both eventually (theyโ€™re different experiences)

Extra Travel Tips

  1. Start early for Kamakura โ€“ Thereโ€™s a lot to see

  2. Kawagoe is compact โ€“ Can see main spots in 3-4 hours

  3. Weekdays are better โ€“ Both get crowded on weekends

  4. Try the local food โ€“ Shirasu in Kamakura, sweet potato in Kawagoe

  5. Enoshima bonus โ€“ If you go to Kamakura, consider the island
