A local's honest opinion on Kanazawa. Why I love this city and who should visit.

Is Kanazawa Worth Visiting? Should I Skip It?

โ€œIs it worth visiting Kanazawa? Some people say to skip it.โ€

I really love Kanazawa. If you like sushi, art, or Japanese sake, you should definitely go!

Why Kanazawa Is Special

โ€œWhat makes it different from other cities?โ€

Best sushi in Japan โ€“ I think Kanazawa has even better sushi than Tokyo. The fish comes straight from the Sea of Japan, and itโ€™s incredibly fresh.

Beautiful gardens โ€“ Kenrokuen is one of Japanโ€™s top 3 gardens.

Ninja Temple (Myouryuji) โ€“ This is a must-see! The whole temple is full of traps, hidden rooms, and surprises. You need a reservation, but itโ€™s worth it.

Art museums โ€“ The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art is amazing.

Who Should Visit Kanazawa

โ€œIs it right for me?โ€

Go to Kanazawa if you:

  • Love sushi and seafood
  • Enjoy traditional Japanese culture
  • Want to see beautiful gardens
  • Like sake (Kanazawa has great local sake)
  • Want fewer tourists than Kyoto

Maybe skip if you:

  • Only have 1 week total in Japan
  • Prefer big city excitement
  • Donโ€™t like seafood

How to Get There

โ€œIs it easy to reach?โ€

From Tokyo: 2.5 hours by Shinkansen (Hokuriku Shinkansen)

Very easy! You can do it as a day trip, but I recommend staying 1-2 nights.

What Japanese People Actually Do

Most locals:

  • Visit Kanazawa for weekend trips

  • Combine with Shirakawa-go trip
  • Consider it a more relaxed alternative to Kyoto

  3. Try the local sake โ€“ Kanazawa is famous for it

  4. Rent a bike โ€“ The city is flat and easy to cycle

  5. Combine with Shirakawa-go โ€“ About 1.5 hours by bus
