Best places to recommend in Kyoto in October.

β€œBest places to recommend in Kyoto in October?”

I lived in Kyoto for two years, and October is one of my favorite months there. The summer heat is gone, the crowds are smaller than November (peak foliage), and the weather is perfect for walking. Here’s what I actually did on my last October visit:

Morning: Eastern Kyoto

  1. Kiyomizu-dera (7:00-8:30am) β€” arrive at opening to avoid crowds. The wooden terrace overlooking the city is stunning in early light
  2. Ninenzaka & Sannenzaka β€” the preserved stone-paved streets below Kiyomizu. Perfect for photos and window shopping
  3. Yasaka Shrine β€” quick stop, free entry, beautiful any time

Lunch: Nishiki Market

  1. Nishiki Market (11:00-12:30) β€” the β€œKitchen of Kyoto.” Walk through and eat your way along the 400-meter covered street. Try:
    • Dashimaki tamago (rolled omelette) β€” Β₯300-500
    • Tako tamago (baby octopus with quail egg) β€” Β₯400
    • Matcha sweets β€” various shops, Β₯300-600

Afternoon: Central & Western Kyoto

  1. Kinkaku-ji / Golden Pavilion (14:00) β€” iconic, worth seeing once. Β₯500 entry
  2. Arashiyama Bamboo Grove (15:30) β€” walk through the towering bamboo forest. Less crowded in late afternoon
  3. Togetsukyo Bridge β€” the main bridge in Arashiyama with mountain views

Evening: Gion District

  1. Pontocho Alley (18:00) β€” narrow lantern-lit alley along the river. Dozens of small restaurants
  2. Gion walking β€” if you’re lucky, you might spot a geiko (geisha) heading to an appointment

October-Specific Tips

  • Early foliage starts in late October at higher elevations β€” check Eikan-do and Tofuku-ji
  • Weather: 15-22Β°C, comfortable. Bring a light jacket for evenings
  • Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages) β€” October 22nd. A massive historical parade through the city. Worth planning around!
  • Less crowded than November β€” this is the sweet spot before foliage peak brings massive crowds

Getting Around

  • Bicycle rental β€” my #1 recommendation. Kyoto is flat, and you can cover more ground. ~Β₯1,000/day
  • Skip the bus β€” cheap (Β₯230) but always packed and unreliable timing
  • Taxi β€” reasonable for 2-3 people, especially Kyoto Station ↔ Arashiyama area
  • Walking β€” Eastern Kyoto (Kiyomizu β†’ Gion) is best explored on foot

Where to Eat

  • Omen (Gion) β€” handmade udon noodles, local favorite
  • Musubi Cafe β€” onigiri (rice balls) with creative fillings
  • Any place with θ‘Œεˆ— (gyoretsu/queue) β€” if locals are lining up, it’s good
