Best Way to Get Around Kyoto
A local explains why taxis and bicycles are better than buses in Kyoto.
βWhatβs the best transportation in Kyoto to see famous sites in 2 days?β
I highly recommend taxis or bicycles! Hereβs why.
The Bus Problem
βWhy not take the bus?β
Kyoto is extremely crowded right now!
A few months ago, I tried to take a bus and:
- Had to skip THREE buses
- They were all completely full
- Wasted a lot of time
Buses are not reliable in busy seasons.
Best Options
βWhat should I use instead?β
For short trips (2-3 days):
- Charter a taxi for the day
- Comfortable and efficient
- Driver knows the best routes
For spring or fall:
- Bicycles are great
- Weather is nice
- See more of the city
The Taxi Advantage
βIsnβt taxi expensive?β
Consider the benefits:
- Save time (time is precious on vacation!)
- No waiting in lines
- Go directly to attractions
- Can book in advance
Taxis are also sometimes hard to find due to high demand!
Train Travel
βWhat about trains?β
Trains work, but:
- Takes much longer
- Many walking transfers
- Not all places near stations
Good for getting TO Kyoto, not moving AROUND Kyoto.
