Best Way to Get Around Kyoto

A local explains why taxis and bicycles are better than buses in Kyoto.

Best Way to Get Around Kyoto

β€œWhat’s the best transportation in Kyoto to see famous sites in 2 days?”

I highly recommend taxis or bicycles! Here’s why.

The Bus Problem

β€œWhy not take the bus?”

Kyoto is extremely crowded right now!

A few months ago, I tried to take a bus and:

  • Had to skip THREE buses
  • They were all completely full
  • Wasted a lot of time

Buses are not reliable in busy seasons.

Best Options

β€œWhat should I use instead?”

For short trips (2-3 days):

  • Charter a taxi for the day
  • Comfortable and efficient
  • Driver knows the best routes

For spring or fall:

  • Bicycles are great
  • Weather is nice
  • See more of the city

The Taxi Advantage

β€œIsn’t taxi expensive?”

Consider the benefits:

  • Save time (time is precious on vacation!)
  • No waiting in lines
  • Go directly to attractions
  • Can book in advance

Taxis are also sometimes hard to find due to high demand!

Train Travel

β€œWhat about trains?”

Trains work, but:

  • Takes much longer
  • Many walking transfers
  • Not all places near stations

Good for getting TO Kyoto, not moving AROUND Kyoto.

What Japanese People Actually Do

Most locals:

  • Know buses are overcrowded
  • Use taxis for convenience
  • Ride bicycles in good weather
  • Plan around peak times

Extra Travel Tips

  1. Book taxis early – They get fully booked

  2. Spring and fall – Most crowded seasons

  3. Bicycle rentals – Available near stations

  4. Kyoto is big – There’s enough for a week!

  5. Start early – Beat the crowds
