Is 2 nights in Kyoto too much or is 2 days 1 night enough?

“Is 2 nights in Kyoto too much or is 2 days 1 night enough?”

I actually lived in Kyoto for two years before moving to Tokyo. My honest answer: 2 nights is not too much — it’s the minimum I’d recommend.

Why 2 Nights Works

  • Day 1: Eastern Kyoto — Fushimi Inari (go early!), Kiyomizu-dera, Gion walking, Nishiki Market
  • Day 2: Western/Northern Kyoto — Arashiyama bamboo grove, Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), Ryoan-ji rock garden
  • Day 3 morning: Last-minute shopping or a quiet temple like Tofuku-ji before leaving

With 1 night, you’d be rushing through everything and miss the feeling of Kyoto — which is about slowing down.

What Most Tourists Don’t Know

Kyoto’s temples are just the beginning. What I loved living there:

  • Nishiki Market — the “Kitchen of Kyoto.” Walk through and eat everything
  • Pontocho Alley — narrow lane along the river with tiny restaurants. Go at dusk
  • Philosopher’s Path — especially beautiful in cherry blossom season or autumn
  • Uji — 30 minutes south, famous for the best matcha in Japan. Try matcha soba noodles

Getting Around

  • Don’t rely on buses — they’re cheap (¥230) but often packed and late
  • Rent a bicycle — Kyoto is flat and perfect for cycling. ~¥1,000/day
  • Taxis — reasonable for groups of 2-3, especially when you’re tired
  • Subway — limited but useful for Kyoto Station ↔ northern areas
