Are Stores Open During New Year's Holiday in Japan?

A local's guide to what's open and closed during Japanese New Year. Plan ahead so you're not caught off guard!

Are Stores Open During New Year's Holiday in Japan?

β€œAre stores open during the last week of December and first week of January?”

This is important to know! Years ago, almost everything closed for New Year. Now things have changed, but some places still close. Let me explain what to expect.

What’s Usually Open

β€œWhat can I count on being open?”

These are typically open (even on Jan 1):

  • Convenience stores (7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart) – 24/7, always
  • Major train stations – Trains run on holiday schedules
  • Hotels – Of course!
  • Temples and shrines – Very busy for New Year visits!
  • Some large shopping malls – Many open from Jan 2

About 70% of stores in big cities stay open now.

What Often Closes

β€œWhat should I expect to be closed?”

These commonly close (Dec 31 - Jan 3):

  • Department stores – Many close Dec 31 - Jan 1
  • Small family restaurants – Especially in residential areas
  • Local shops – Mom-and-pop stores take holidays
  • Banks – Closed, but ATMs usually work
  • Government offices – Closed
  • Some museums – Check individual schedules

Big City vs. Countryside

β€œDoes location matter?”

Big cities (Tokyo, Osaka):

  • More things stay open
  • Major shopping areas are busy
  • Restaurants may have limited hours

Countryside and small towns:

  • Much more closes
  • Restaurants are hit-or-miss
  • Always call ahead if you need something specific

New Year’s Special Events

β€œIs there anything special happening?”

Hatsumode (First Shrine Visit)

  • Millions of people visit shrines Jan 1-3
  • Very crowded but festive atmosphere
  • Temples and shrines are definitely open!

Fukubukuro (Lucky Bags)

  • Stores sell mystery bags of goods
  • Great deals, long lines
  • Usually Jan 1-2

What Japanese People Actually Do

During New Year, most locals:

  • Spend time with family
  • Visit shrines (hatsumode)
  • Eat special New Year foods (osechi)
  • Watch TV specials
  • Rest and relax

It’s one of the few times Japanese people take real vacation!

Travel Tips for New Year

β€œAny advice for this period?”

  1. Book Shinkansen tickets early – Everyone travels to visit family

  2. Hotel prices go up – Book accommodation in advance

  3. Stock up on Dec 30 – Buy snacks and essentials before closures

  4. Check restaurant hours – Call ahead or have backup options
