I love Nikko! I visit there about every two months. Let me explain the differences.

The Main Difference

Kyoto:

• City feel
• Universities and modern buildings
• Easy train access
• Many tourists

Nikko:

• Nature-rich mountains
• Waterfalls and lakes
• Hot springs
• More peaceful

Natural beauty:

• Beautiful waterfalls
• Mountain scenery
• Lakes
• Hot springs (onsen)
• Forests

• Kegon Falls
• Lake Chuzenji

Getting There

“How do I get to Nikko?”

Transportation options:

• Train from Tokyo (about 2 hours)
• Bus available
• Having a car is better – Nikko is quite spacious

Stay for a few days to really enjoy it!

My Recommendation

“Which should I choose?”

If I were to guide a foreign friend, I would definitely take them to Nikko.

Both places have shrines and temples, but:

• Kyoto = temples + city
• Nikko = temples + nature
