Yes β Nikko is absolutely worth visiting, especially if you enjoy nature, history, and a peaceful atmosphere. Itβs not as famous as Kyoto internationally, but it offers a different kind of beauty: mountains, waterfalls, hot springs, and fewer crowds.

My Personal Opinion
I absolutely love Nikko. I go there almost every two months for a short getaway. Thereβs something magical about the mountains, clean air, and the balance between culture and nature.
Nikko is quite large, and to fully enjoy the area, I recommend renting a car if possible. Some of the best waterfalls, hidden hot springs, and scenic spots are easier to reach by car. π
Unlike Kyoto, which is very walkable and city-based, Nikko gives you that escape into the forest feeling. Itβs perfect for anyone who wants to slow down and relax while still seeing historical landmarks like Toshogu Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Highlights of Nikko
- Toshogu Shrine: Lavishly decorated and historically important shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu
- Kegon Falls: One of Japanβs most beautiful waterfalls β especially stunning in autumn π
- Lake Chuzenji: A peaceful lake with nearby hiking and onsen
- Yumoto Onsen: A quiet hot spring town in the mountains β perfect for overnight stays
- Edo Wonderland: A fun historical theme park great for kids and families

Travel Tips
- Bring comfortable shoes β Nikko has hills and lots of walking
- Consider renting a car for easier access to waterfalls and lakes
- Autumn is peak season β book accommodation early π
- Wear layers β the mountain climate can change quickly
- Less English signage compared to Kyoto β have a translation app ready
