Can I Wear Jewelry in a Japanese Onsen?
A local's advice on accessories in hot springs. Why you should remove them.
โCan I wear jewelry in a public onsen?โ
I recommend removing all accessories โ rings, necklaces, earrings, everything. Hereโs why.
Why Remove Jewelry?
โWhatโs the problem?โ
Hot spring water can damage your jewelry:
- Most onsen water is acidic
- Different springs have different minerals
- Your accessories may rust or discolor
- Some metals react badly with sulfur
Even gold and silver can be affected by certain hot springs!
What About My Valuables?
โWhere do I put them?โ
Donโt worry โ there are lockers:
- Changing rooms have lockers for your belongings
- Most lockers have keys you wear on your wrist
- Your valuables are safe
Itโs normal to wear the locker key into the bath on your arm.
What to Remove
โSpecifically what should I take off?โ
Remove:
- Rings (including wedding rings)
- Necklaces and bracelets
- Earrings
- Watches
- Hair accessories with metal
Keep:
- The small towel for modesty (donโt put in water)
- Locker key on wrist
What Japanese People Actually Do
Most locals:
- Remove all accessories before bathing
- Store everything in lockers
- Donโt worry about theft (itโs very rare)
- Know that hot spring minerals can damage jewelry
Extra Travel Tips
-
Leave expensive jewelry at home โ Or in your hotel safe
-
Lockers are safe โ Japan has very low theft
-
Check the water type โ Sulfur springs are especially harsh on metal
-
Rinse after bathing โ If you accidentally wore something
-
Ask staff โ They can advise about specific springs
