Is It Safe to Walk at Night in Tokyo?
A local explains which areas to avoid and why Japan is generally safe.
โIs it safe to walk at night in Tokyo?โ
Yes โ Tokyo is one of the safest major cities in the world, even late at night. Iโve walked home alone at 2am countless times without a second thought.
How Safe Is It Really?
- Japanโs violent crime rate is one of the lowest of any developed country
- Women walking alone at night is common and generally safe
- Children ride trains alone to school from age 6 โ that tells you a lot about the safety culture
- Lost wallets get returned with cash still inside โ police lost-and-found offices are full of returned items
Areas to Be Aware Of (Not Dangerous, Butโฆ)
| Area | What to Know |
|---|---|
| Kabukicho (Shinjuku) | Red light district. Touts may approach you with bar/club invitations. Just say no and keep walking. Not dangerous, but can be annoying |
| Roppongi late night | Nightclub area. Some aggressive bar touts. Avoid being pulled into unknown bars (drink prices can be inflated) |
| Shibuya Center-gai | Can get rowdy on weekends. Drunk people but not dangerous |
General Tips
- Avoid touts โ anyone on the street inviting you into a bar or club, especially in Kabukicho or Roppongi. Politely decline and walk away
- Donโt accept drinks from strangers โ standard advice anywhere in the world
- Trains stop around midnight โ plan your last train or budget for a taxi/capsule hotel
- Convenience stores are everywhere โ theyโre a safe haven if you need directions, a rest, or just to feel comfortable
What Japanese People Actually Do at Night
- Walk home from the station โ completely normal, even for women
- Eat at late-night ramen shops โ some are open until 4-5am
- Sleep on trains โ youโll see businessmen dozing on the last train. Nobody bothers them
- Use 24-hour establishments โ manga cafes, karaoke, internet cafes are all safe overnight options
