Street Smoking

Generally NO in most cities:

  • Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto ban street smoking
  • Large fines possible (Β₯1000-5000)
  • Look for designated smoking areas

Find smoking areas:

  • Near train stations
  • Marked with signs
  • Small enclosed spaces or outdoor sections

Indoor Smoking

β€œWhat about inside buildings?”

2020 law changed things:

  • Most restaurants: No smoking
  • Bars/izakayas: Sometimes allowed
  • Hotels: Smoking rooms available
  • Shopping centers: Smoking rooms exist
