Can I Find a Taxi Without Booking Near Shinjuku Station?

β€œAre there taxis available outside Shinjuku station without a reservation?”

Yes! When I take a taxi in Tokyo, I don’t use apps or call ahead. I just find a taxi stand.

How to Get a Taxi in Tokyo

β€œHow does it work?”

Taxi stands – Most train stations in Tokyo have taxi stands where you can ride without a reservation. Just line up and wait for the next available car.

On the street – You can also wave down empty taxis. Look for the red light in the front window (means it’s available).

No apps needed – As of 2024, taxi apps aren’t very popular in Japan. The traditional way works great!

Finding Taxi Stands

β€œWhere exactly are they?”

Look for:

  • Station exits (usually clearly marked)
  • Hotel entrances
  • Department stores
  • Major intersections

At Shinjuku Station, there are taxi stands at multiple exits.

Useful Tips

β€œAnything else I should know?”

USB charging – Many taxis have USB-A ports to charge your phone. Bring your cable!

Doors open automatically – Don’t touch the door. The driver opens and closes it.

Cash or card – Most taxis accept credit cards now, but cash is always safe.

No tipping – Not expected in Japan.

What Japanese People Actually Do

Most locals:

  • Walk to the nearest taxi stand
  • Wave down taxis on busy streets
  • Rarely use taxi apps
  • Just tell the driver the destination (showing Google Maps works great)

Extra Travel Tips

  1. Late night – Taxis are always available, even at 3am

  2. Rush hour – Can be hard to find empty taxis

  3. Bring your cable – For USB charging

  4. Small bills – Drivers can make change, but Β₯10,000 bills can be awkward

  5. Address or map – Show your destination on Google Maps if needed
