How to Travel from Tokyo to Kyoto
Experience the journey from Tokyo to Kyoto with the Shinkansen. Enjoy scenic views, comfort, and efficiency in just 2.5 hours!
“What’s the best way to get from Tokyo to Kyoto?”
Take the Shinkansen (bullet train). It’s fast, comfortable, and an experience in itself.
Shinkansen (Best Option)
“How does it work?”
Tokyo → Kyoto by Shinkansen:
- Time: About 2 hours 15 minutes (Nozomi)
- Price: ¥13,320 one way (reserved seat)
- Departs from Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station
- Trains run every 10-15 minutes
- No reservation needed (but recommended for reserved seats)
Types of Shinkansen:
- Nozomi - Fastest (2h15m) - NOT covered by JR Pass
- Hikari - Slightly slower (2h40m) - Covered by JR Pass
- Kodama - Slowest (4h) - Covered by JR Pass
Should I Get a JR Pass?
“Is the JR Pass worth it?”
Do the math:
- JR Pass 7-day: ¥50,000
- Tokyo-Kyoto round trip (Hikari): ¥26,640
- If you’re doing other JR trips, the pass pays for itself
If you’re ONLY going Tokyo-Kyoto-Tokyo, a JR Pass may not be worth it.
Flying?
“Should I fly instead?”
Usually not worth it:
- Flight time: 1.5 hours, BUT add airport time
- Total door-to-door: 4-5 hours (vs 2.5 hours by Shinkansen)
- More stressful with security, check-in, etc.
- Sometimes cheaper on budget airlines, but the hassle isn’t worth it
