Should I Visit Tokyo or Kyoto First?

A local compares both cities. Which one to start with and why.

Should I Visit Tokyo or Kyoto First?

โ€œShould I go to Tokyo or Kyoto first? Which is better for first-time visitors?โ€

Both are amazing! But they offer very different experiences. Hereโ€™s my advice.

Tokyo vs Kyoto

โ€œWhatโ€™s the difference?โ€

Tokyo:

  • Modern, huge, exciting
  • Shopping, technology, anime
  • Fast-paced city life
  • Many different neighborhoods
  • International airport hub

Kyoto:

  • Traditional, historic, peaceful
  • Temples, shrines, geisha
  • Slower pace
  • Compact city center
  • Traditional culture

My Recommendation

โ€œWhich one first?โ€

Start in Tokyo if:

  • You fly into Narita/Haneda
  • You want modern Japan first
  • Shopping is important to you
  • You like nightlife and entertainment

Start in Kyoto if:

  • You fly into Kansai (Osaka)
  • Traditional Japan is your priority
  • You prefer slower pace
  • Temples and history excite you

How to Do Both

โ€œCan I see both?โ€

Absolutely! Most people do:

  • Shinkansen (bullet train) connects them in 2 hours 15 minutes
  • JR Pass covers this route
  • Easy to visit both in one trip
  • 3-4 days each city is ideal

What Japanese People Actually Do

Most locals:

  • Live in one, visit the other
  • See Tokyo as work, Kyoto as vacation
  • Prefer Kyoto for traditional experiences
  • Visit Tokyo for shopping and entertainment

Extra Travel Tips

  1. Fly into one, out of the other โ€“ Saves backtracking

  2. Tokyo first is common โ€“ Adjust to jet lag in the big city

  3. Kyoto needs reservations โ€“ Popular temples book up

  4. Add Osaka โ€“ Close to Kyoto, different vibe

  5. Donโ€™t rush โ€“ Both deserve at least 3 full days
